Celebrate Folic Acid Day: Taking Charge of Your Baby's Health Before Pregnancy

Every year on September 1st, we celebrate Folic Acid Day! This day raises awareness about the crucial role folic acid plays in preventing birth defects, particularly Spina Bifida.

Pregnant woman

What is Folic Acid?

Folic acid, a synthetic form of folate (naturally occurring B Vitamin), is essential for healthy cell growth and development. It plays a critical role in the early stages of pregnancy, specifically during neural tube closure. The neural tube forms the brain, spinal cord, and nerves of your developing baby.

Folic Acid and Spina Bifida Prevention

Spina Bifida is a serious birth defect where the neural tube fails to close completely. This can lead to nerve damage, physical disabilities, and other health problems. Studies have shown that consuming adequate folic acid before and during early pregnancy can significantly reduce the risk of Spina Bifida by up to 70%.

Why is Folic Acid Day Important?

Since most pregnancies are unplanned, it's vital for all women of childbearing age to get enough folic acid. Folic acid is most effective when taken before conception and in the first trimester, a time when many women may not even know they're pregnant.

How Can You Get Enough Folic Acid?

There are two main ways to increase your folic acid intake:

  • Diet: Consume foods naturally rich in folate, such as leafy green vegetables, lentils, beans, nuts, and fortified grains.

  • Supplements: Take a daily multivitamin containing 400 micrograms (mcg) of folic acid.

Who Should Take Extra Folic Acid?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that all women of childbearing age take 400 mcg of folic acid daily. However, some women may need a higher dose,  including those with:

  • A personal or family history of neural tube defects

  • Certain medical conditions like diabetes

  • Taking medications that can interfere with folate absorption

Talk to Your Doctor

Discuss your folic acid needs with your doctor, especially if you're planning a pregnancy or have any risk factors. They can recommend the appropriate dosage and advise on the best folic acid supplement for you.

Celebrate Folic Acid Day by Taking Charge!

By incorporating folic acid into your daily routine, you're taking a proactive step towards a healthy pregnancy and reducing the risk of birth defects for your future baby. Let Folic Acid Day be a reminder to prioritize your health and empower yourself with knowledge!
